Trying Again.

The topic of what to blog about has popped up again. I have this undying urge to publicly write about something, but what? I’ve tried blogging a couple of times but I feel it’s been pretty aimless, hence not keeping up with it. So I need a plan, something that keeps my interest and something easily stuck to.

First off I need to put aside the time to blog. I’ve actually got some spare time now, or from my wife’s point of view, I’ve stopped working 27 hours a day now that Ponoko can’t afford a development team. So back to the rather sedate pace of contracting, compared with start-ups anyway.

I’ve got the time and the desire, how about the topic? I have several interests which I could write about – developing websites, photography and cooking. So this blog is going to cover all of those with a heavy emphasis on websites.

As I’m going to primarily talk about website development I still need a plan. That’s easy. The infrastructure behind both Ponoko and HireThings has been powered by Centos – which I want to move away from. There are several reasons for this, primarily I want to diversify my distribution knowledge and secondly the latest releases of tools I use are not immediately available for Centos if at all. Memcached, Varnish, ImagicK and Ruby being a couple of important ones.

My next post will be on what I plan to do about that, probably seeing how much I can squeeze out of a small Ubuntu server at SliceHost.

Oh, and finally, who am I? I’m a Ruby on Rails contractor who focuses on the back end rather than the fancy pancy shiny front end. Want your site to go faster? I’ll make it scream. Or just tell you how horrible your code is with some suggestions on how to fix it.
